September Birth Connection

We will be continuing to look at another article on evidence on for being induced based on due dates. I think the information will tie in nicely with the previous topic of advanced maternal age. So, come join us for the next Birth Connection meetup so we can learn together and see how we can best support our clients!

Now that we have better technology to get more "accurate" due dates, everyone is so focused on it. That is one of the first questions people will ask you. However, a due date is not set in stone. It is more accurate to say estimated due date because everyone and every pregnancy is different. You can easily go into labor from 38 weeks to 42 weeks. This is why I like to refer to it as a due month. It is also why I recommend keeping the specific date to yourself or only telling your closest circle. This will help to minimize everyone constantly messaging you towards the end of your pregnancy to see if baby is here yet, which can add unnecessary stress.

Nowadays, providers start to get antsy when people get close to or pass their due dates. Many often like to refer to the ARRIVE trial as evidence to induce, but that study is not necessarily widely applicable. They also get nervous because of the increased risk of complications, including stillbirth, or concerns over your placenta aging. However, they tend to focus on absolute risk, which makes the risk sounds far scarier than the relative risk or your individual risk. So, lets take a look at the evidence on inducing for due dates and what it means for our clients so we can help provide them with evidenced based information to combat scare tactics from their providers, so they can hopefully avoid unwanted and unnecessary inductions and all that comes with it.

I encourage everyone to try to look at one of the additional resources below to further our discussion for September's meetup. However, even if someone does not finish the article or get through the additional resources, you are still more than welcome to come. This is a fantastic way to connect with fellow Tucson birthworkers and learn from each other.

Reminder: Birth Connection is intended to be an inclusive & safe space where difficult topics may come up that push us and are inclusive of the entire birth community. Please be mindful of your words and actions and always be respectful of others.
